Indexes, Thesauri, and Controlled Vocabulary

With-in each database there are indexes, thesauri, and controlled vocabularies specific to that database's subject area. Using these tools is a great way to expand and limit your search results. Here are a few examples:

  • ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials: Using the Browse an Index option located at the top tool bar, use the drop down menu to choose Scripture Citation. This option allows you to search for articles specific to the scripture citation you are researching. or you can use the Subject Thesaurus to search a specific term. Doing this allows you to see the controlled vocabulary used by the ATLA indexers. (and will open up more/better results)

PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES & PsycBOOKS:  Using the thesaurus as well as the controlled vocabulary associated with these databases is imperative to effective research. Psyc indexers have consulted the latest edition of the DSM (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Using the thesaurus ensures the correct terms are being used. You can even limit your search to articles/studies that utilized a specific test or measurement.
