Introducing Canvas

LBC|Capital is upgrading to a new learning management system (LMS) during the summer and fall of 2019. We are transitioning from Schoology (known to many of us as eCampus) to Canvas, a leading LMS among colleges and universities.

You will receive details through your LBC email and Schoology Updates, but here are the answers to some common questions:

When will I be taking courses in Canvas?

We are moving our courses to Canvas in two groups:

  • Accelerated undergraduate students (taking courses onsite and online) will use Canvas for courses starting in July 2019.
  • Traditional undergraduate and Capital students will use Canvas for courses starting in August 2019

As in Schoology, courses will become visible in Canvas one week before they officially start. Unlike Schoology, students will not be able to interact in courses until their start date.

When and how can I access Canvas?

You will be notified by LBC email and/or a Schoology Update when your Canvas account has been activated. You will be able to access Canvas through the Student Portal or by going directly to

You will use the same login credentials you currently use to access Schoology and your LBC email/Office 365. (Note: You will not be able to log in before your account has been activated.)

Where can I learn more about Canvas?

Canvas is easy to use, but it does require taking a little time to learn the new system. When you receive access to Canvas, you will be enrolled in an online, self-paced module called Canvas 101. In one hour or less, it will guide you through all the basics you need to know to navigate, communicate, and use Canvas to submit assignments, engage in discussion forums, and take quizzes/tests.

Will I still have access to Schoology?

You will have access to the Schoology system and your courses in it through November 30, 2019. After that, they will no longer be available.

Hopefully, you have been keeping digital copies of your submitted coursework (a good habit to be in), but if you need to download any papers you submitted, you can do that by clicking on an individual assignment, re-opening your submission, and clicking the download icon () in the document viewer. There is no way to download your submissions in bulk.

Is there a mobile app for Canvas?

Yes! The mobile app can be installed on your phone and tablet. Follow these links to access the iOS (Apple) Canvas Student App or the Android Canvas Student App.

Where do I go for help with Canvas?

We are here to help you! 

  • If you are having trouble understanding something in a course, contact your professor by phone or email, both of which should be provided in the course syllabus. You may also contact your professor through Canvas Conversations. Watch this video or read this guide to learn how.
