Academic Support

Language Proficiency Development:

  • Reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
  • Vocabulary building and grammar instruction.
  • Pronunciation and accent reduction.

Academic Support:

  • Assistance with understanding academic content in English across various subjects.
  • Study skills such as note-taking, test preparation, and academic writing (e.g., essays, reports).

Cultural Adjustment:

  • Helping students understand cultural norms and expectations in the classroom, on campus, and in social environments in the local community.
  • Providing guidance on effective communication in different cultural contexts.

Social Integration:

  • Opportunities for language practice through conversation clubs, peer mentoring, or informal gatherings.
  • Assistance with navigating everyday situations like shopping, healthcare, and transportation in an English-speaking environment.

Test Preparation:

  • Preparation for language proficiency exams like TOEFL, IELTS, or other standardized tests.
  • Support in improving test-taking strategies for English-language assessments.

Personalized Support:

  • Tailored instruction based on individual language levels and learning goals.
  • One-on-one tutoring or small group sessions for focused attention.

Resource Access:

  • Access to language labs, online resources, and ESL materials.
  • Workshops on writing, listening, and grammar.

Career and Professional Development:

  • Support in resume writing, job interviews, and workplace communication.
  • English for specific purposes (e.g., business English, medical English, etc.).

Accommodations

Accommodations for Non-Native English Speakers 

LBC provides support resources and accommodations for students whose first language is not English. Students struggling with courses and assignments because of English language fluency may request the following to support their academic success: 

  • Extra time on tests, quizzes, and exams 

  • Use of Read & Write to help with translation  

  • Recording of class lectures

Note: Based on a student’s English proficiency, teachers must establish realistic expectations. Accommodations/modifications should be provided to ensure that classwork, assignments and assessments measure a student’s content knowledge and skills.
